Travel Tips for Greece

Greece has many islands, in fact there is estimated to be anywhere between 1200 and 6000 dependant and the size in which people class as an island. Greek Island cruises are simply put, a must for any cruise fanatic. The Greek Islands are seperated into different areas which we describe below along with there highlights.

Dodecanese Isles

These are made up of 15 large islands and around 150 small ones found around the south east of the Aegean sea and Eastern Med. The major ports of calls here are Kalymnos, Kos and Rhodes. The best time to cruise here is between June and August to enjoy the warmer weather. This set of islands lie close to the turquoise coast of Turkey so provide you with a wealth of rich history and they are culturally are a blend of eastern and western traditions.

Cyclades Isles

These islands consist of around 220 islands with the mayor cruise ports of calls being Santorini & Mykonos. These isles are famous for their minimalistic architecture, attractive villages, beaches and truly lovely landscapes making them a must see on thousands of travellers around the world. July and August are the more popular times for cruise ships to visit, however the temperature in these months can be really high and reach 37c, so maybe a cruise around June and September would be a better option, you’ll find less tourists and a cooler climate.

Ionian Isles

Situated on the west coast of Greece in the Ionion sea you’ll find the popular isles of Zakynthos, Corfu, Kefalonia & Paxos which are famous for their stunning beaches and greenery including olive and cypress trees. You’ll also find some unusual wildlife for example Zakynthos is home to the Loggerhead Turtle. The Ionian Islands has a cooler climate for those who don’t like it too hot.

Sporades Isles

These isles are found in the northwest Aegean with the most popular island in terms of cruise ship visitors is the isle of Skiathos. These islands are similar to the other greek isles and are famous for their beaches and coastal diving and snorkeling areas.  Alonnisos is the center & surrounded by uninhabited isles and home to dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals.
