Travel Tips for Australia and New Zealand

Explore Australia & New Zealand on One Unforgettable Cruise Holiday

There’s something special about seeing Australia and New Zealand from the water. From Sydney’s famous harbour to the glacier-carved fjords of New Zealand’s South Island, these itineraries combine iconic cities, dramatic coastlines and relaxed days at sea into one seamless holiday.

For travellers wanting variety without the stress of constant flights and hotel changes, an Australia and New Zealand cruise delivers the perfect balance of exploration and comfort. You can wake up in a different destination every few days while enjoying all the conveniences of a modern cruise ship.

Most itineraries depart from Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne and cross the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Along the way, travellers experience a mix of cosmopolitan cities, volcanic landscapes, wildlife encounters and some of the most scenic cruising routes in the world.

Popular ports often include Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga, Dunedin and Christchurch, while scenic highlights regularly feature Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound. Back on the Australian side, itineraries may include Hobart, Melbourne or extended coastal sailings depending on the route.

One of the biggest appeals of cruises Australia and New Zealand is the variety of experiences packed into a single trip. One day might involve wine tasting in Hawke’s Bay, while the next could be spent cruising quietly through towering fjords surrounded by waterfalls and rainforest.

  • Convenient departures: Sail directly from major Australian ports without long-haul international flights.
  • Scenic cruising: Enjoy incredible coastal views and world-famous fjords from the comfort of your ship.
  • Flexible cruise styles: Choose from family-friendly ships, premium vessels or luxury small-ship experiences.
  • Ideal for couples and families: There’s a strong mix of relaxation, sightseeing and onboard entertainment.

Why Australians Love Cruising Across the Tasman

A cruise holiday between Australia and New Zealand offers an easy and enjoyable way to experience two countries in one trip. Rather than rushing through airports or organising multiple hotels, your accommodation, dining and entertainment stay with you throughout the journey.

Modern ships sailing these routes are designed for comfort, especially during sea days crossing the Tasman. Travellers can enjoy pools, live entertainment, specialty restaurants, wellness facilities and spacious lounges while taking in ocean views.

Another major advantage of Australia and New Zealand is the seasonal timing. Most sailings operate between October and April, which aligns perfectly with warmer weather and longer daylight hours across both countries. This makes shore excursions and scenic cruising particularly rewarding.

New Zealand itself offers exceptional diversity for cruise travellers. Auckland combines harbourfront dining with city energy, Wellington delivers a thriving arts and café culture, while Dunedin is known for wildlife and Scottish heritage. In the South Island fjords, ships glide past steep cliffs, misty peaks and waterfalls that tumble directly into the sea.

For Australian travellers, these itineraries also represent strong value for money. Meals, accommodation, entertainment and transport between destinations are bundled into one booking, helping simplify holiday planning and budgeting.

There’s also flexibility in cruise length. Some itineraries focus primarily on New Zealand over 10 to 12 nights, while others include extended Australian coastal stops or repositioning journeys for travellers wanting longer adventures.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with family or planning a bucket-list getaway, a cruise between Australia and New Zealand offers a relaxed pace combined with unforgettable scenery.

Food & service.
Crowding, constant marketing of over-priced products, too American (in language, food & drink) & lack of Australian staff.

Too small. TV in unwatchable position. Stuffy.

That measures were not taken against those who did not isolate themselves when they were clearly sick and coughing.

8 day cruise with the Pacific Encounter to Brisbane

We booked regular time dining and found this easier than anytime dining as it pre-booked attendances for us at various restaurants. Booked tender process to go to Conflict Island was good.
The off boarding process (to Brisbane) was fairly tedious and took several hours, mostly of waiting in queues.

3 of us in a balcony room, it was fine.

Spending time with great friends and making new ones
There were too many feral kids I was very disappointed in the action of unsupervised children. Running up and down outside staterooms, knocking on doors after midnight, yelling and just bad behaviour in lifts. Parents should know what their children are up to not just get on the ship and leave them. I was very disappointed in this cruise but in saying that it was great to mellow, the food was great and so were the staff. I will rethink booking another one for quite a while
