Tahiti is actually the name commonly used to describe French Polynesia, a group of islands and archipelagos made up of Tahiti and Moorea in the Windward Islands, Bora Bora and its islets in the Leeward Islands, Raiatea & Taha'a in the Society Islands, or Îles de la Société and Huahine in the Tuamotu Archipelago "Archipel des Tuamotu", the largest in the world. The artist Paul Gauguin visited here and the more remote Marquesas Islands in the 1880s, capturing the wildly beautiful landscapes and the equally wonderful locals.
