Mount Rushmore

mount rushmore

Mount Rushmore, and its looming, granite-faced American presidents, is a globally recognisable landmark. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are carved into the rock of the mountain, 60 feet above the trees. The idea of carving the presidents into the rock was originally thought up by historian Doane Robinson, to encourage tourists to visit South Dakota. It worked, and now millions of people visit the monument every year.

More than just an impressive sculpture, Mount Rushmore is in a beautiful natural area where hiking and climbing are popular ways to enjoy the scenery. You will also have the chance to visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, a monument to the Sioux Lakota Indian leader. Native American artisans show their crafts here, and you can learn about the importance of the area to the Native Americans at the Indian Museum of North America.

Yellowstone National Park

yellowstone national park canyon

The oldest national park in the world, and home to some amazing scenery, flora and fauna, Yellowstone National Park is loved by locals and travellers alike. The park covers some two million acres and is inhabited by all kinds of amazing animals, including bears, elks, moose, bison and wolves. The park also has around 500 active geysers every year and seeing one shooting enormous jets of water into the air is an amazing experience.

Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon is also part of the tour of the park, a breathtaking, twenty-mile-long gorge that can be seen from a variety of vantage points. Dusky Pink and lemony yellow mix in the rock of the canyon, caused by mineral stains from hot springs and steam vents, making for an absolutely beautiful view. This is added to by the blue-green river that runs along with it, plunging spectacularly 308 feet into the canyon below at the Lower Falls. Both the Upper and Lower Falls can be seen on the trip.

The Rocky Mountains

See how indigenous people hunted Buffalo at the Head-Smashed-In buffalo jump, and learn how the meat was processed and what it meant for the tribe. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Icefield Parkway, considered the most beautiful drive in the world, with over 100 ancient glaciers, waterfalls, and glistening lakes set into the valley.
