The city of Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. state of Florida and makes an ideal holiday destination. Due to the many canals in the city, Fort Lauderdale is also known as the American Venice. Antigua is an island in the West Indies in the Caribbean region and it is the main island of the country of Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua means "ancient" in Spanish and was named by Christopher Columbus. In 1784 Admiral Horatio Nelson sailed to Antigua where he found warm, steady winds, a coastline of safe harbours, and a protective coral reef: the perfect environment to establish Great Britain's most important Caribbean base. Over 200 years later the same characteristics that attracted the Royal Navy have transformed Antigua in one of the Caribbean's premier tourist destinations.
