Royal Caribbean International has entered a corporate, three-party collaboration in a bid to boost the number of passengers sailing from Singapore.
Partnering with the Singapore Tourism Board and the Changi Airport Group, Royal Caribbean hope the newly forged relationship will encourage more international travellers to cruise out of Singapore, by making it easier to find tourist information and reserve a space on connecting flights to and from the city.
Its thought the deal will be the first of many new partnerships between Royal Caribbean and other tourism enterprises around the globe, as Royal Caribbean continue to drive passenger numbers in key cruise markets. The line is expected to partner with businesses in a number of different countries over the coming years, including Australia, China, Europe, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan and North America.
Royal Caribbean announced the new partnership amid plans to increase sailings on its Singapore-based liner, Mariner of the Seas, from its current figure of 30 cruises per year to 40 per year until 2018. The ship will offer seven to fifteen night sailings from Singapore, with international passenger numbers projected at 170,000 a year, which represents a 50% growth.
Sean Treacy, Royal Caribbean’s managing director of Singapore and Southeast Asia, said: “Having deployed ships here regularly for the last seven years, Royal Caribbean now looks forward to its next phase of significant growth in Singapore. Our three-year deployment plan is our strongest commitment ever to this market and we see great potential in Singapore as a source market and regional cruise hub.”
Treacy went on to add that the partnership with both Singapore-based organisations poses a significant economic advancement for Singapore, as well as a boost to the tourism industry of Southeast Asia as a whole.
Neeta Lachmandas, Assistant chief executive at the Singapore Tourism board, enthused: “We hope Royal Caribbean’s commitment will inspire new cruise itineraries around the region to offer more reasons for travellers to take to cruising, and also motivate our neighbouring ports and destinations to invest and realise fully the tremendous potential of the Asian cruise industry.”
