Princess Sending New Ship to China Year Round

Further demonstrating the growing importance of the Chinese cruise industry, Princess Cruises has announced their newest ship will sail out of Shanghai all year round. The as-yet-unnamed ship is due to launch in summer 2017, and will become the first ship to be based out of China all year and built specifically for the Chinese market.

The ship is expected to carry over 3,500 guests, approximately the same capacity as the line’s current largest vessels, Royal Princess and Regal Princess. A number of innovative features are set to be included on the new ships to help make cruising out of Shanghai more relaxing, enjoyable and intuitive for the blossoming Chinese cruise market.

Princess Cruises only began homeport cruising out of China last year, when the Sapphire Princess spent a few months in Shanghai. The ship is set to return to Shanghai this year to sail from the city between June and October. The Sapphire Princess benefits from new features and amenities designed specifically for the Chinese market.

Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises, explained: “Deploying our next new ship in China underscores our strong commitment to growing the China cruise market and providing discerning travellers with amazing vacation experiences at sea. And as this ship is still in the design phase we are looking forward to creating other new and exciting venues and experiences catering to the Chinese vacationer, which we will reveal in the coming months.”

This announcement from Princess Cruises follows news that China could soon account for 75% of the world’s cruise industry and Royal Caribbean are to send their upcoming Quantum Class ship, Ovation of the Seas, to homeport in Tianjin, China.
