P&O’s Pacific Pearl Arrives in Auckland Ahead of Record NZ Cruise Season

New Zealand tourism bodies are hailing the arrival of P&O Australia’s Pacific Pearl in Auckland as a “major boost” for the country’s burgeoning cruise market, which is set to experience a record breaking period of increased cruise travel over the next five months.

Carefully timed by P&O to coincide with the Downer NRL Auckland Nines, Pacific Pearl will transport thousands of passionate rugby league fans to the Land of the Long White Cloud over the coming weeks. As an added incentive for rugby supporters, Pearl will also carry Brisbane Broncos star player, Adam Blair, to and from Auckland on selected sailings — giving P&O guests the opportunity to meet this legend of the game.

Ann Sherry, Executive Chairman of Carnival Australia and New Zealand, which operates P&O Australia, believes the themed rugby league cruises are the perfect way to kick-off P&O’s record season of sailing in New Zealand.

She said: “With the recent addition of two ships to our fleet, we’ve been able to significantly increase our presence in New Zealand to 20 cruises this year, compared to 10 in 2015. As a result, this year P&O will more than double the number of passengers we carry on cruises from New Zealand, with a 122 per cent rise over our 2015 numbers, reflecting New Zealanders’ growing passion for cruising.”

Over the next five months Pacific Pearl will undertake a staggering 20 itineraries in waters off New Zealand, generating up to $20 million dollars in revenue for the NZ tourism industry.

Brett O’Riley, Chief Executive of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development, enthused: “Auckland is experiencing a record cruise season, which is estimated to deliver $251.7 million to the region. It’s fantastic to see P&O now leveraging one of our city’s major events and bringing Australian rugby league fans on a cruise to experience the Nines and everything else Auckland has to offer.”
