P&O Australia Confirms First Ever Fraser Island Visit

Next year, P&O Australia will visit the World-Heritage listed Fraser Island for the first time. Both of the fleet’s two upcoming ships, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, will visit the beautiful islands found along Queensland’s southern coast.

Pacific Aria will visit the island on 3 April as part of a roundtrip from Brisbane, and the Pacific Eden will make its way to Fraser Island in December during its roundtrip from Sydney. These visits will continue P&O Australia’s dedication to exploring new lands and destinations – with the line recently announcing 15 new port visits.

The year 2016 looks set to be a big one for P&O Australia as the line’s fleet grows from three to five with the addition of two extra ships. Combined with the new itineraries, P&O are firmly establishing themselves as one of the leading cruise lines down under.

Fraser Island is renowned as the world’s largest sand island, and is also Queensland’s largest island. It was even known as Great Sandy Island, for a period of time. With rainforests, woodland, swamps, forests and sand dunes; Fraser Island has plenty of natural wonders to share with visitors.

The island assumed its current moniker following the stories of Eliza Fraser who was shipwrecked upon the island.

Although the island is popular with visitors; Fraser Island has barely 200 permanent residents. It has far more animal residents however, with up to 50 different mammals including one of the last remaining communities of pure dingos in Eastern Australia.

Fraser Island has a selection of heritage-listed and protected sites include the Sandy Cape Light, and the whole island was placed on the Australian National Heritage List in 2007.

It is expected that the Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden will undertake more future visits to the island, alongside visits from other members of the fleet.
