Seabourn’s new ship will be built and delivered within the next three years
Last month, at a media lunch in Syndey, the Director of Sales at Seabourn hinted that big news was on its way:
“We’re waiting for an announcement – all I can say is the company is profitable and it’s growing, so watch this space.”
The following day, news began circulating: a Letter of Intent had been signed with shipyard Fincantieri in Italy. A new Seabourn ship would be built at the shipyard and delivered in the latter half of 2016 – exciting news!
“We are pleased to be moving forward with the plans we announced earlier this year to build a fourth ship similar to the highly regarded new design we introduced with Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Quest. The experience and the amenities offered by these award-winning ships have raised the bar in ultra-luxury cruising.”
“Seabourn is already in discussion with shipbuilders, and an order is likely to be announced within the current fiscal year. The new ship will allow Seabourn to maintain much of its current guest capacity.”

While the exact cost and size of the new ship has not yet been confirmed, Meadows did confirm that the new ship will “replace capacity that is leaving the Seabourn brand”. He is of course referring to the recent sale of Seabourn Pride, Spirit and Legend to Windstar Cruises. These ships will leave the fleet and be transferred to their new owners in April 2014, April 2015 and May 2015, respectively. Each of the departing ships carry 208 passengers, while the line’s three most recent ships each carry 450 passengers.
Speaking ahead of the new shipbuild, Gabriele Cocco, Fincantieri’s Executive Senior Vice President Merchant Vessels, said:
“We are very pleased to have acquired a new customer like Seabourn and at the same time to have strengthened our historic partnership with the Carnival Group. This agreement is particularly important: it strengthens our leadership in the luxury cruise niche and confirms our primacy in the cruise industry.”
Meanwhile, Director of Sales, Tony Archbold said that Seabourn appeals to a wide range of Australians, who are the line’s second biggest market (the first is the British.) Archbold predicts the Aussies will catch up with the UK market next year.
Seabourn Odyssey will spend two months in local waters this summer. Meanwhile, Sojourn will visit a record 18 ports in Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, the company’s first-ever Antarctica season will begin imminently.
