For the first time ever more than one million people took a cruise out of Australia in 2014, according to a study by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). The new report from CLIA demonstrates that the Australian cruise industry grew a massive 20.4% from 2013 to 2014, with a total of 1,003,256 passengers cruising from the region throughout 2014.
The Cruise Market Source Report for Australia also revealed that the country has the largest cruise penetration rate in the world, with 4.2% of the population taking a cruise in 2014. This figure rose from 3.6% in 2013. The South Pacific continues to be the most popular cruising destination for Australian holidaymakers due to the close proximity, startling beauty and unspoiled beaches – accounting for 39% of all Australian cruise holidays.
One of the most significant increases was short holiday cruises, with 59% more cruise passengers enjoying a cruise of four nights or less in 2014 than the previous year. Despite the rapid increase in popularity of short trips, cruises lasting 8-14 still account for the lion’s share of Australian cruise holidays.
These figures saw Australia become the fourth largest cruise market in the world, narrowly overtaking Italy. The country now only sits behind North America, Germany and the UK & Ireland in the list of countries with the most cruise passengers.
The continuing growth of the Australian cruise industry however could soon see the market leapfrog the countries before it, if increases of more than 20% continue year on year. More ships than ever are homeporting in 2015, suggesting it could be another record breaking year.
The cruise market could look significantly different in ten years’ time with both the Australian and Chinese cruise markets enjoying huge booms in popularity – challenging the more traditional strongholds in Europe as the biggest and most influential cruise markets.
