Theme Cruises – Arts and Crafts Cruises

Whilst most people want to take a cruise to chill out, recharge batteries and take it easy, there are also theme cruises available that offer the opportunity to challenge your knowledge or learn new skills.
Art lovers can indulge their love of art history, modern art or architecture on-board.  Cruise lines bring respect professionals in their field to hold in-depth lectures, question and answer sessions and informative sessions to broaden horizons.

Trips on-shore will give the chance to enjoy local themed art, and discover the towns and locations that inspired the masters.  Hidden treasures can be found in local arts centres and small seaside villages.

If you want to try out different craft skills, you may be pleased to hear that Holland America Line regularly run arts and craft themed cruises in association with

Expert tuition is offered on art techniques that you can use for scrapbooking, making your own greetings cards, Christmas decorations or home décor.  The lecturers and instructors can discuss with you the local craft stores and other art related places of interest available on port visits.

Fully inspired, you can return to the ship to try out your new found skills and indulge your love of art.  Whether photography, watercolours, silk painting or even pottery on some cruises, you are sure to create a one-off original to take home as a momento of your dream cruise.

Knitting cruises help to improve your knitting skills whilst being pampered on the beautiful ships.  Knitting has been proven to promote better health, through reduction in stress and encouraging relaxation.  Each day will be something new, whether learning a challenging stitch, or trying to develop your own patterns and styles.

If you’d like to be able to produce your own yarn for your projects, maybe the handspinning cruise is the one for you.  You’ll learn to combine fibres to create your own custom yarn at a fraction of the cost.  Classes using spinning wheels and also drop spindles will be available.  You’ll leave with a very relaxing new meditative hobby and a much wider understanding of yarn types, thicknesses and qualities.  Whilst in port, there will be opportunity to visit fibre farms, local yarn producers to see each countries unique production techniques.

The craft theme cruise members form only a small percentage of the total passengers on board.  So whilst you are going to the lectures and enjoying your crafting time, the other members of your party can be partaking of the other facilities on board.  Each day there are loads of activities to keep them busy and plenty of sporting opportunities.  They are bound to make friends and will be happy for you to be enjoying your craft time.

Most theme cruises have other programs running, such as culinary classes, computer skills training, fitness and yoga classes or even wine tasting!  And if you have any time left you could always spend time just relaxing, reading the latest novels or sunbathing whilst the deep blue sea passes you by.

I would love to teach on cruises ships. I have been head of an art department for 20 years and have retired early to enjoy my skills. I have been teaching high school since 1977 and have also taught tafe classes through the school. I love silk painting, marbling, pottery both hand building and work, painting, screen printing etc
Are there ever any positions available?

    • Good afternoon Kerry,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us, I’m sure jobs come up on cruise liners all the time, I would recommend contacting the cruise lines directly as we only sell them.

      Many Thanks
