Holland America Line and Carnival Cruises keep expanding

Due to the increased popularity of cruising, Carnival Cruise line and Holland America Line have ordered yet more new ships.

Their parent company, Carnival Corporation, has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Finantieri, the famous Italian shipbuilder, reportedly worth around £1.3 billion.

Carnival Cruises’ 4,000 passenger ship will be launched for winter 2016, just four years after its’ latest ship Carnival Breeze which was delivered earlier this year.

Holland America Line’s new vessel will be a 2,660 passenger premium line ship and it follows the luxury Nieuw Amsterdam which debuted in 2010. Delivery is expected in 2015.

Co-incidentally, both P&O and Princess Cruises have also ordered further ships which will be ready at a similar time.

Carnival Corps’ Chairman and CEO Micky Arison said: “Today’s order continues the company’s strategy of introducing two to three ships per year across the corporation’s 10 brands. We have strategically timed the introduction of these new ships to allow ample time for those brands to further grow their passenger base and absorb the new capacity while minimizing revenue yield dilution in the remainder of their existing fleets.”

These latest proposed additions to the fleets make scheduled new ships will be arriving two in 2013, two in 2014, three for 2015 and two for 2016, adding considerably to the tonnage of the company. However, this will probably be balanced by capacity reductions in some of their older ships.

Talk in the industry then turns to the naming ceremonies – where will they be held and who will be given the honour of godmother to these new ships? The last two Holland America Lines ships, Ms Eurodam and Ms Nieuw Amsterdam had the honour of having HM Queen Beatrix and HM Princess Maxima of the Netherlands as their Godmothers. There are plenty more candidates within the Dutch Royal Household to hold the new ship’s title; we can’t wait to find out who Holland America Line chooses for the honour.

Carnival Breeze’s Godmother, which has just been announced is Tracy Wilson Mourning.  Tracy, who is the wife of retired NBA star Alonzo Mourning, works as a mentor, designer, broadcast journalist and motivational speaker.  She founded the Honey Shine Mentoring Program in 2002 to make a difference in the lives of young girls by providing workshops, camps and activities designed to inspire young girls shine as women.

Carnival Magic has Lindsey Wilkerson as her Godmother. Lindsey works tirelessly as an ambassador for the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Previously, Lindsey was a patient at the same hospital.   Before the naming ceremony in 2011 she said “I am so very excited to be godmother to the Carnival Magic!  It is quite a privilege to represent the thousands of children helped by the lifesaving research and treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”
