Silversea Expedition Itinerary to Include Visit to Orangutan Care Center

A boutique line that’s perfected the balance of luxury and adventure, Silversea is eternally popular with cruisers in search of unique at-sea experiences. Now, the company’s purpose-built Silver Discoverer expedition ship is taking this commitment to the next level, with the legendary Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas set to appear as a guest lecturer on board an upcoming voyage on October 18th. Described by the line as simultaneously “thrilling, awe-inspiring and humbling”, Silver Discoverer voyages unlock access to some of the world’s most remote locations.

An Indonesian odyssey

A renowned scientist, conservationist and educator, Dr. Galdikas is famous for her work with the endangered orangutans of Indonesian Borneo. With over 45 years of experience in the field, Dr. Galdikas’s on-board presentation will offer guests first hand insight into the care, presentation and study of endangered orangutans. She’s considered a voice of authority on the unique extant great apes, and the chance to engage with her face to face is an incredible opportunity for nature enthusiasts.

Mark Conroy, Silversea’s managing director for the Americas comments, “We’re extremely honoured to have Dr Galdikas join this special cruise to talk about her work in Borneo and personally guide our guests on their visit to her world-famous Camp Leakey and Orangutan Care Center. This is an exceptional opportunity for nature lovers and conservation-minded travellers to discover the remarkable islands of Indonesia and help support efforts to protect the region’s endangered wildlife.”

VIP access to Indonesia’s secluded wildlife sanctuaries

Spanning for 11 days, the unique voyage will sail from Balikpapan to Singapore, traversing through the exotic islands of Indonesia. Two full days will be spent in Central Kalimantan’s Kumai port, where passengers will be invited on a private tour of Camp Leakey. Hidden away in Tanjung Puting National Park, the camp is run by Dr Galdikas’ non-profit Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) charity. As well as a glimpse at the park’s orangutans, guests will also get a chance to spot proboscis monkeys, gibbons, macaques and over 200 species of native birds. Adding to the exclusivity is coveted access to the foundation’s Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine facility, a private facility occasionally visited by VIP guests such as former US President Bill Clinton.
