Why go on a Vanuatu cruise?
Vanuatu consists of 82 small, volcanic islands – 65 of which are inhabited. The tropical climate and white sandy beaches make this the ideal destination for anyone seeking some escapism.
With crystal clear warm waters, cascading waterfalls and friendly locals, Vanuatu truly is a tropical island dream.
However there is more to these islands than just the beaches. Port Vila – the national capital, situated on the island of Efate – is the buzzing centre of the tourism trade. A colonial town with shops and stunning gourmet restaurants, all with spectacular views. The local people are friendly and welcoming – this is not a culture in which you will be hassled or expected to haggle for your souvenirs. Soak up the laid back atmosphere and perhaps snack on a local oven-baked “laplap” – a doughy mix filled with meat or fish.
A must-do shore excursion is a trip up Mount Yasur, which dominates the landscape on the island of Tanna. You can simply walk up the volcano – this takes about 45 minutes from the main road – or you could take a horse ride. Be sure to take a postcode to send from the Volcano Post – the world’s only postbox at the top of a volcano! It almost goes without saying that the views from Mount Yasur are spectacular.
Also worth a visit is the National Museum of Vanuatu. Housed in an impressive traditional building, it is home to authentic artefacts such as ceremonial headdresses and pottery. There are also photographic and video exhibitions to give you a taste of traditional ceremonies and legends.
Of course you would be forgiven for spending your time in Vanuatu relaxing on the postcard-ready beaches with the balmy breeze washing over you, but look a little deeper and you will find there is much more to this paradise island than you might be expecting.
