About St Kitts

More formally known as Saint Christopher Island, St Kitts is located in the West Indies with the west side bordering the Caribbean Sea and the east side facing the Atlantic Ocean.

The capital of the island, Basseterre, is also its largest port. The city is located next to the cruise-ship terminal so is a good starting point for your day. The focus of the town is a place called Circus – a roundabout which is modelled on London’s Piccadilly Circus. The charming town centre features a Victorian-style clock tower as well as quaint shops, cafes and banks. Local people tend to gather in Independence Square – a waterless fountain which was used in the 1790s for slave auctions and is dominated by an impressive cathedral.

Visit the National Museum whilst in Basseterre. This small but informative museum tells the story of St Kitts’ sugar and colonial history and the displays explain the island’s traditions and it’s journey to independence.

For a different view of St Kitts take a ride on the Scenic Railway – a sightseeing tour on board a vintage, double-decker train. The journey traces an important historical sugar cane route and your trip is made even more special thanks to on-board refreshments and entertainment.

To learn more about St Kitts’ history of the sugar cane trade and slavery then make sure you visit one of the island’s plantations and great houses. These grand homes, once inhabited by wealthy landowners, have now been restored and some of which contain impressive antique collections. You can also visit Romney Manor – the oldest sugar plantation on the island, which was once owned by an ancestor of the US president Thomas Jefferson.

Of course if you prefer to spend a day relaxing then you will not be disappointed by the beautiful beaches of St Kitts. Enjoy a relaxing swim in the Caribbean Sea or if you are feeling more adventurous you can try your hand at a variety of watersports or take a sailing trip.

There really is something for everyone on this magnificent island. Book your cruise today and see for yourself!
