About Ravenna

Ravenna is a relatively small city, located a few miles off Italy’s north east coast. For a brief period it was the capital of the Roman Empire. Today it is one of the country’s most fascinating cities, and one that doesn’t make it onto enough people’s ‘must-visit’ lists.

Ravenna is especially worth visiting for those interested in religious history and art. The country’s many churches are decorated with stunning mosaics, built by Byzantine craftsman in Roman times. And the various basilicas and museums are a treasure trove for people interested in that particular era.

In particular, the Basilica di San Vitale is well worth a visit, with its mosaics representing scenes from the Old Testament. And legend has it that the mosaics in the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo were once ordered to be blackened because they were distracting worshippers. Both buildings boast some of the most stunning architecture in the city.

Meanwhile the Mausoleo de Teodorico, built in 520 for Gothic king Teodorico, is another must-see.

The city is easy to navigate, with regular bus services and many top attractions within easy walking distance of each other.
