Located on the north coast of the Bahamas – a tiny island in the Caribbean – Nassau is home to just 250,000 people, yet you’ll feel a big welcome while you’re here.
Thanks to the all-year-round warm climate, sunbathing is a favourite pastime for most visitors to this beautiful island, but there’s plenty to see and do here too. Along the beach you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of watersports, not to mention snorkelling around the pristine coral reefs with tropical fish swimming around you.
Visit around Boxing Day or New Year’s Day and you’ll be lucky enough to experience the festival of Junkanoo, which dates back to the days of slavery. Participants dress up in costumes and ‘rush’ down the main Bay Street, with prizes for the best music and dance on show.
Bay Street is also the main commercial centre of Nassau, and it’s worth a look around just to experience true day-to-day life for the residents. You’ll also find a wide range of bars, shops and restaurants. Visit the Straw Market to find handcrafted straw goods such as dolls, hats and handbags.
Food is good here too, with plenty of access to delicious fresh seafood. A local delicacy is conch (pronounced conk), a sea snail that is often served in a spicy salad. It’s also considered an aphrodisiac around these parts.
Cunard Cruises is one of the main cruise providers visiting Nassau.
