Cunard hosts first wedding at sea on the first anniversary of the Royal Wedding:
On April 29th 2012, on the first anniversary of the British Royal Wedding where the whole world watched Kate and William say “I Do” in Westminster Abbey, one happy couple decided to tie the knot en route to New York. Mr Barry Maloney and his new bride Denise became the first couple to get married onboard a Cunard ship.
The cheerful event took place aboard Queen Mary 2.
The lovely couple live in Lancashire in the north of the UK and they’ve been together for 28 years, however, it was after hearing they could get wed on their favourite ship that they made their minds up to marry!
Mr Maloney said that he could think of no better venue than the Queen Mary 2 for his big day, and he said that he’s sailed with Cunard many times before. He noted the line’s excellent service and quality. He said: “It’s still jaw-dropping no matter how many times you visit. It would only be Cunard – we have tried other lines but they do not step up to the mark like Cunard does”.
He continued, adding: “The best part is, you don’t just have the wedding day – you have the rest of the voyage to enjoy and the destination. It’s not over when the ceremony has finished as you are still on board with your friends and family.”
Denise also enjoyed her big day, saying that it as “perfection from the start”. She declared the day magical and said “one year on from the Royal Wedding we had our own Royal Wedding at sea!”
The happy couple set sail on April 27th, two days before the ceremony. Of course, as the couple said their nuptials in the middle of the atlantic during the early part of their cruise trip, they were able to enjoy a honeymoon in New York immediately after their wedding.
Cunard currently offer weddings onboard all of their cruises which last 7 days or more. The Cunard Wedding Package is priced at US$2,500 and it includes a wedding coordinator, the ceremony conducted by the Captain, wedding stationery, floral arrangements, music, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, the wedding cake and a celebratory breakfast in bed for the bride and groom. A wedding licence fee is additional. To maintain exclusivity, only one wedding will be arranged per day and only on days at sea.
