Norwegian Cruise Line inaugurated the new Miami-based ship with a swanky celebrity-filled party.
Norwegian Cruise Line christened their new ship Norwegian Getaway earlier this month with a fun launch party that featured everything from flashy dancers to glittering confetti and spectacular fireworks. The fun atmosphere was fitting for a ship based in The Magic City.
The ship was christened in the traditional method, by smashing a bottle of champagne against the hull while the boat is blessed. As this happened, the ship’s godmothers, the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders stood shaking their colourful pom poms.
International music superstar Pitbull (real name Armando Christian Perez) headlined the party, performing some of his best known hits. The star is from Miami, and has worn Latin Grammy Awards for his music. He also holds a majority equity stake in Voli, a brand of luxury, light handcrafted spirit, which is delicately blended from the finest multi-distilled wheat vodka, pure spring water and natural infused flavours. Norwegian Cruise Line has also collaborated with Pitbull and Voli launching the drinks brand onboard the Getaway ship. Ahead of the event, rapper Pitbull spoke about Voli and its new partnership with the cruise line:
“It’s great to partner Voli with Norwegian Cruise Line. Its a perfect match, what better than a party on a beautiful ship with amazing vodka… holy Voli!!”
Speaking about the launch of the new ship, Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer said:
“Miami’s ship is home and we couldn’t be more proud to bring this spectacular vessel to this electric city. We thank Miami-Dade County for this warm welcome and the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders for christening this beautiful ship and are looking forward to a very successful inaugural season.”
Norwegian Getaway is now offering weekly seven-day cruises from PortMiami to the Easter Caribbean.
About Norwegian Getaway:
Norwegian Getaway is the cruise line’s newest ship, following the recent launch of sister ship Norwegian Breakaway. Both ships form part of the line’s new Breakaway Class. It was announced last year that Norwegian have already ord
ered two new “Breakaway Plus” ships that will be delivered in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
Getaway, which is based at PortMiami (often known as the ‘Cruise Capital of the World’) features bright and fun Miami-inspired hull artwork by local artist David “LEBO” Le Batard.
Onboard the ship, you’ll find a range eateries, bars and amenities. Of course, they’re all themed around Miami and Latin experiences. Rolando Aedo, the chief marketing officer for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau seemed impressed with Getaway’s theme, calling the ship “a floating billboard of our great destination.” A high accolade indeed!
Norwegian Getaway will definitely be home-ported in the city for a minimum of three years, as the company have signed an agreement with PortMiami.
In addition, PortMiami gave Norwegian a $1.4 million incentive to use for marketing the ship (and the city by proxy). Speaking about the relationship at the time, Hydi Webb, PortMiami’s manager of business development said “it was just an opportunity that we had to, as a port, jump all over.”
