Norwegian Cruise Line Goes Green for Earth Day

Norwegian Cruise Line is celebrated throughout the industry for its commitment to adopting environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable policies across the board.

The line has been leading the way in ocean conservation practices for over 40 years, going above and beyond its expected call of duty in order to fulfil its fundamental company value of Environmental Protection.

Held on Tuesday April 22, this year’s Earth Day saw Norwegian launch the all-new Eco-Smart Cruising programme to mark its extraordinary environmental achievements over the past 12 months.

What is Eco-Smart Cruising?

As the name suggests, the scheme has been established with the aim of protecting the world’s increasingly threatened ecosystem. The company sets a prime example for other leading cruise lines through the incorporation of a range of pioneering policies and technologies. These include everything from waste recycling programs to the increasing of environmental awareness in regards to operational impact. Norwegian has racked up an impressive array of eco achievements over the years, its major 2013 milestones including:

  • Recycling 1254 tons of cardboard which saves an estimated 23,540 trees.
  •  Using its innovation to recycle 2517 tons of scrap metal, 2988 tons of glass and 669 tons of plastic.
  • Depositing 750 tons of waste material at Waste-to-Energy facilities which saves enough kilowatt hours to power 1700 homes for a month.
  • Cutting its gasoline usage by 30,096 gallons.
  • Conserving over 6,349,000 gallons of fresh water which equates to the daily water needs of over 117,040 individuals.
  • Reducing its oil usage by 3715 barrels.

To add to its ongoing environmental dedication, Norwegian Cruise Line recently announced an ongoing partnership with The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. The organisation’s devotion to funding marine scientific research, introducing educational programs and encouraging corporate best practices falls perfectly in line with the Norwegian philosophy. Founder and artist Guy Harvey was commissioned to design bespoke hull artwork for the line’s newest fleet member, Norwegian Escape.

Greener Guests

Established in partnership with North America’s leading wind and solar power provider NextEra Energy Resources, Norwegian guests will be offered the opportunity to contribute to a renewable energy trust as well as reduce their carbon footprint. The scheme is an industry first and one of the shining stars of the Eco-Smart Cruising experience. On-board learning schemes are also in place which offer young passengers comprehensive eco-education via Splash Academy, Entourage and the Officer Snook Water Pollution Program.

An Eco-Friendly Fleet

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getawayare the newest additions to the company fleet and boast an array of ground-breaking eco-friendly features. These include advanced water treatment systems, intelligent waste fuel recovering equipment, next generation silicon-based antifouling and friction reducing hull paint as well as efficient galley management systems designed to recover heat and minimise overall energy consumption. The line furthers its environmental advocacy through the installation of 28 exhaust gas scrubbers on six of its vessels as well as the stationing of environmental officers on board all of its ships.

From oceanic conservation to raising global environmental awareness, Norwegian Cruise Line deserves industry wide praise for its efforts to keep the world healthy, clean and sustainable for the future generations.
