Guy Harvey Reimagines Norwegian Escape Hull

Norwegian Cruise Line has long been renowned as one of the most innovative entities in the business, treating guests to a cornucopia of exotic itineraries, unique shore excursions and of course, stunning artwork gracing the exteriors of its ships. World famous marine artist Guy Harvey is one of the highest profile individuals its managed to commission, and his latest canvas was the hull of the 1000 foot long Norwegian Escape.

Norwegian Escape gets ready to set sail

Set to make her grand debut in Miami this November, Norwegian Escape is the line’s newest fleet member and has been under construction in Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard for quite some time. Now, she’s almost ready to unfurl her sails, and Harvey was on-hand to check her out on a VIP visit showcasing her beautiful new paint job.

Caribbean dreaming

Inspired by the kaleidoscopic colours and diverse marine life of Caribbean waters, the art work is utterly mesmerising.  Each side features a dynamic marine scene, with the two blending seamlessly together at the point of the hull. Harvey’s signature sailfish steals the show, accompanied by other underwater animals including sting rays, sea turtles, whale sharks and a myriad of tropical fish.

“I’m so proud to showcase the incredible marine life of the Caribbean on the largest canvas a human could possibly paint,” says Guy Harvey of his latest work.

A team of helping hands bring Harvey’s hull art to life

While Harvey designed the custom work by hand, he wasn’t expected to actually paint the colossal hull himself. So how did Norwegian Cruise Line manage to get his artwork onto the 164,600 tonne ship? The process starts with a laser projector that reflects the design onto the ship’s hull. A professional team of artists then traces the outlines onto the hull to incorporate the ship’s curvature. After prepping the area and taping up any exposed edges, the team gets to work hand painting the design onto the ship.

“After weeks of work, the artisans at Meyer Werft have done an incredible job of recreating my art on such a vast format. I’m overjoyed at the level of detail that has been achieved and I can’t wait to see Norwegian Escape in her element out on the ocean.”

Saving the world’s oceans, one hull at a time

As well as being one of the world’s most illustrious marine wildlife artists Harvey is also an eco-warrior conservationist with a passion for saving the world’s oceans. Using his talent as a painter, he blends his background as a marine biologist, angler, diver and photographer to create visually stunning marine art designed to raise global awareness for the need to protect and preserve the planet.

Not only will Norwegian Escape passengers be able to marvel at Harvey’s hull work but they’ll also be treated to Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation-produced documentaries in all state rooms. These are intended to educate guests about marine conservation and enrich the at-sea experience.

“We had great expectations for this artwork, which reflects the marine life of the spectacular waters on which this ship will sail,” says Andy Stuart, President and Chief Operating Officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Guy’s vision for Norwegian Escape’s signature artwork is the perfect complement to everything this ship stands for.”
