Broadway’s ‘Rock of Ages’ to Headline New Norwegian Breakaway Ship

Norwegian Breakaway
, the latest Norwegian Cruise Line ship will be launched April 2013.  Currently being constructed in Germany, it will be the first of two Breakaway cruise ships.  Weighing in at over 144,000 ton, with space for 4,000 passengers, Norwegian Breakaway will be based in New York, but sail the Bahamas, Southern Caribbean and Bermuda.

These days cruising has taken on a highly sophisticated look with everything from quality snack bars, specialist restaurants to challenge those on dry land and sports facilities for all abilities. Indeed it can be very easy to forget that you are floating away in the middle of the ocean!

Norwegian Cruise Lines have always prided themselves with the quality of entertainment on board.  In 2010 another of their fleet, Norwegian Epic was heralded a classic with its Las Vegas theme of Legends in Concert and the Blue Man Group.  More recently, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Saturday Night Fever’ have been featured aboard, and even back in the 1970’s and 80’s the cruise line had such Broadway classics as ‘Hello Dolly’ and ‘A Chorus Line’.  Norwegien Breakaway aims even higher and with Broadway as its theme, the entertainment embodies all that is ‘the City that never sleeps’.

‘Rock of Ages’ – the Tony award nominated musical that is breaking all records on Broadway and has productions in Toronto, Australia and London’s West End, will headline the entertainment on board, along with ‘Burn the Floor’ and ‘Cirque Dreams and Dinner Jungle Fantasy’.

The tight jeans, teased hair and headbanging of the 1980’s will be reverberating around the ship and the cast are expecting everyone to be on their feet, clapping and rocking along with them!  It was chosen because it has that extra musical edge to it, and with all the songs being so familiar it has a broad appeal to a wide range of audiences.  It is a classic rock love story and features classics such as ‘I Wanna Know What Love Is’, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ and ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’.  Following on from the success of Mama Mia a couple of years ago – a film of the musical ‘Rock of Ages’ was released in June 2012.

For a different appreciation of Broadway music, Burn the Floor is based around ballroom dancing with a strong musical theme linked to the New York City dance theatres.  But sedate it is not, as this ‘sizzling and sexy’ show takes a modern look on the classic ballroom dances such as Foxtrot, Cha-cha, Charleston, Rumba and Salsa.  In addition, you can put into practice what you have seen with dance and exercise classes with the cast during the cruise.

Both shows take place 6 times each over the period of the cruise, so there’s no excuse to miss either and with Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy to enjoy 12 times per cruise there won’t be a dull moment for those lucky enough to be joining Norwegian Breakaway next year.
