Celebrity Cruises Serve Up World’s Rarest Mushrooms

If you’re a self-confessed foodie get ready to set sail, because Celebrity Cruises has just announced plans to serve up the rarest mushrooms on the planet. The line has managed to get its hands on two white truffles which will grace the plates of passengers embarking on November and December Caribbean itineraries.

Celebrity celebrates truffle season!

White truffles are found exclusively in the Northern Italian region of Piedmont. They grow only in the months of October to December, which makes them a rare delicacy sought after by chefs across the globe.

Known by gourmands as the ‘diamond of the kitchen,’ white truffles are incredibly rare and come with the price tag to match. Celebrity Cruises won two of the highly prized mushrooms weighing a total of 700 grams at Italy’s recent World White Truffle Charity Auction. While the auction price hasn’t been disclosed, previous white truffles sold at the event have capped the 100,000 Euro mark. The sting is eased a little by the fact that all proceeds go straight to the Italian Institute for Cancer Research.

Chef’s orders!

Celebrity’s in-house Executive Chef John Suley was on hand to represent the line and personally bid on the rare white truffles. The exclusive ingredient is part of his truffle inspired menu being rolled out on selected Celebrity ships in the lead-up to 2015. They made their debut appearance on Celebrity Equinox’s 10 night Caribbean voyage which whisked passengers away to St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Barbados, Dominica and St. Maarten. Dishes featuring the ultra-indulgent white truffles included wild mushroom risotto topped with thin slices of white truffle and delectable desserts with a dollop of white truffle Chantilly cream.

“White truffles are the ultimate luxury, and Celebrity now has two of the rarest in the world,” he explains. “Sought after by Michelin-starred restaurants and connoisseurs, truffles generate excitement among all foodies – their flavour, aroma, and rarity are so distinct – and they’re only available during a small window each year. They are a natural product of nature, and not even technology can replicate them.”

If you want to sink your teeth into one of Suley’s white truffle inspired creations there are still cabins available for Celebrity’s December Caribbean voyages. Cruise 1st is currently running some fabulous offers on Celebrity’s Caribbean getaways which are guaranteed to please your pocket and your palette.
